Emergency Tooth Extraction in Salt Lake City - Seen Today

A tooth too broken, loose or infected to keep can come out today at our 4500 South office in Salt Lake City, where our dentists handle both simple and surgical extractions. Phone (385) 480-0270 before you come; without a call there's no appointment, and with one, a same-day time has your name on it.

The $99 emergency exam fee is for patients paying without insurance. It covers a limited, problem-focused emergency exam and the X-ray needed to diagnose the tooth. Treatment is priced separately and quoted to you in writing before any work starts.

Our dentists do the removal themselves, in this office.

Signs you need an emergency tooth extraction today

Only a few things force a tooth out. The crack runs down into the root. Decay has eaten so much that no filling or crown has anything to hold. Gum disease has left it wobbling.

Sterile dental instruments laid out for a same-day tooth extraction in Salt Lake City

Pain alone doesn't settle it. Plenty of throbbing teeth are better served by an emergency root canal, and the X-ray is what picks between the two.

The hospital comes first if the swelling has reached your eye or neck, if there's a fever, if your jaw won't open, or if breathing or swallowing is a struggle. Intermountain Medical Center is on State Street at 5300 South, about 2 miles south of our office. Utah emergency rooms do not pull teeth, so call us for the extraction once you've been treated there.

What happens at your same-day visit

Before anything else, we take an X-ray. From it, one of our dentists counts the roots, sees which direction they bend, and checks their distance from the sinus above and from the big nerve below. Simple or surgical gets decided from that image, and so does the price.

Simple means the tooth is still mostly intact above the gum, so the dentist rocks it loose and lifts the whole thing out. Surgical means the tooth has snapped off at the gumline, is partly covered by bone, or has hooked roots; the dentist opens the gum and takes it out in sections. Both kinds get done in our chair on the same visit.

You'll see the price on paper before the dentist picks up an instrument. After you agree, the numbing goes in and gets tested. You should feel pressure, not sharpness. You leave with gauze, written aftercare and our phone number.

Cost of an emergency tooth extraction in Salt Lake City

The exam and X-ray run $99 when you're paying without insurance. The extraction itself gets its own written quote once the dentist has seen the roots, because pulling a one-rooted front tooth and sectioning a molar are different jobs with different prices, and you'll have your number before you decide.

Patients on one of our four in-network plans have the exam and X-ray sent to that plan. We take cash and credit cards, and CareCredit financing and credit union financing are available for larger treatments. Our cost and insurance page covers what's left of the billing picture.

Why patients choose our 4500 South office

Same-day times are kept open Monday through Wednesday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Thursday, 8:00 AM to noon. Call ahead and the room is prepped before you pull in. Outside those hours, a live answering service has the phone (it's staffed 24/7) and saves the next opening for you.

We are in network with Delta Dental Premier, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah, SelectHealth and Cigna. Most other dental plans are out of network, and we submit the claim for you. CareCredit financing and credit union financing are available for larger treatments. Parking is on site. For patients who are anxious about having a tooth pulled, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation are options to ask about when you call.

Frequently asked questions

Will the tooth come out on the day I call?

Most of the time. Phone (385) 480-0270 while we're open, we hold a same-day time, the X-ray rules out saving the tooth, and the written price arrives before the removal starts. The one holdout is a large active infection; that sometimes has to be calmed with a short round of antibiotics before pulling the tooth is safe.

Simple or surgical: how is that decided?

By the X-ray, not by what you see in the mirror. Straight roots on an intact tooth usually mean simple. Surgical covers a tooth snapped at the gum, one that's buried under bone, and one with roots that curve. Your quote spells out which kind you're getting.

Is a wisdom tooth handled the same way?

Mostly, though wisdom teeth sit and root differently enough to deserve their own page: emergency wisdom tooth extraction. When pus and swelling are the main problem, dental abscess treatment is the place to begin.

What's off limits after an extraction?

Straws, smoking and hard spitting, for three days. Rinsing, for the first day. Each of those can tug the clot out of the socket, and a dry socket hurts worse than the extraction did. Keep to soft food for now, and if the bleeding hasn't eased by evening, call us.
