When a filling or crown comes out, the tooth underneath is left exposed. Our dentists replace or re-cement it the same day at our 4500 South office in Salt Lake City. One call to (385) 480-0270 sets aside a same-day time for you. Bring the crown along if you still have it. We don't take walk-ins; a quick call first is all it takes.
Same-day appointments · $99 exam + X-ray · Phones answered 24/7 · In network with four major plans
The $99 emergency exam fee is for patients paying without insurance. It covers a limited, problem-focused emergency exam and the X-ray needed to diagnose the tooth. Treatment is priced separately and quoted to you in writing before any work starts.
Signs you need a lost filling or crown fixed today
You usually feel it right away. A bite lands on something hard, your tongue finds a gap where a filling used to sit, or a crown is suddenly rattling around in your mouth. Other times it's subtle: a rough edge that wasn't there yesterday, or a crown that shifts a little when you press on it.

Under a filling or crown, the tooth has been hollowed out more than a healthy one. Left uncovered, it chips easily and turns sensitive. Go days without a crown and the neighboring teeth can drift, so the crown may no longer seat. That's why today, or the next office day, is the right timing even for a tooth that feels fine.
If it hurts, the urgency goes up. A throbbing ache, or a sharp jolt when you bite, can mean the nerve is exposed or the tooth has cracked. Have that tooth looked at today.
What happens at your same-day visit
Expect an X-ray before anything else; it shows the dentist how much tooth remains and whether decay or a crack is behind the lost filling or crown. Addressing that cause is what keeps the repair from failing again.
With a lost filling, any decay gets removed and the dentist places a fresh filling during the same appointment. A crown that is intact and still fits gets cemented back in place. When the crown is cracked, the tooth beneath it has decayed, or the fit is wrong, the dentist lays out the options: a new crown, a filling to rebuild the tooth, or an emergency root canal first when the nerve has been reached. A tooth broken off below the gum may call for an emergency tooth extraction instead.
In every case, the price comes to you in writing before any work starts. If a new crown is the answer, you leave that day with a temporary on the tooth.
Cost of lost filling or crown repair in Salt Lake City
If you are paying out of pocket, the $99 fee covers your exam and X-ray. Repair work is quoted separately, in writing, because cementing a crown back on, placing a filling and fabricating a new crown are three different procedures.
If we are in network with your plan, the exam fee and X-ray go on the plan's bill instead. We take cash, credit cards, CareCredit financing and credit union financing for larger treatments. Our cost and insurance page covers each step of that process, from the exam to the written quote.

Frequently asked questions
What if I swallowed the filling or crown?
It usually passes on its own without harm, even a small crown. The tooth still needs attention, though, so call for a same-day time. The dentist will place a new filling, or take an impression for a new crown and fit a temporary. If you inhaled it and are coughing or short of breath, go to the emergency room.
Can I glue my crown back on myself?
Not with household glue, which harms both the crown and the tooth. If you need the crown to stay put for a day, drugstore temporary dental cement is made for that; a small dab is enough. Then call (385) 480-0270 and bring the crown with you so the dentist can check the fit and cement it the right way.
How long can I wait with a lost filling?
If the tooth doesn't hurt, a day or two is usually fine with temporary filling material from the drugstore covering the hole. Beyond that, the open tooth begins to chip and decay, and a tooth that hurts shouldn't wait at all. For a chip with no filling involved, see the broken tooth repair page.
Will the old crown fit after being off for a while?
Often, yes, if it's been a few days and the crown and the tooth are both intact. After a week or more, the neighboring teeth can shift enough that the crown no longer seats. The dentist tries it in, checks the fit, and tells you whether re-cementing makes sense or a new crown is needed.
