Signs you need an emergency wisdom tooth extraction today

Some wisdom teeth can be watched. The ones on this page can't. A gum flap over the tooth that keeps getting infected, with swelling and a jaw that won't open fully. Decay that has spread into the molar beside it. A tooth coming in sideways against its neighbor. Pain that has flared more than once and is now constant.

New pain with no clear cause belongs on our wisdom tooth pain page first; it covers what can be treated while the tooth stays.

Swelling on its way to the eye or the neck, or any trouble swallowing or breathing, means the hospital first. St. Mark's Hospital is on 1200 East near 3900 South, about 2 miles northeast of our office. Utah emergency rooms do not pull teeth, so once they've seen you, the extraction is still ours; call.

What happens at your same-day visit

Planning happens on the X-ray. The dentist reads the tooth's angle, how much of it sits under bone, its root shape, and its distance from the nerve canal below. Simple or surgical follows from that, and so does the price.

A wisdom tooth that has come through the gum upright comes out much like any other molar: numbed, loosened and lifted out. A tooth that's tilted, partly buried or still under bone is a surgical extraction. The dentist opens the gum, removes a little bone where needed, and takes the tooth out in sections, then closes the gum with a few stitches.

You hear which kind you need and see the price before anything begins. When the gum around the tooth is badly infected, the infection sometimes gets treated first, with the removal a few days later. You leave with gauze, written aftercare and our number.

Cost of an emergency wisdom tooth extraction in Salt Lake City

Patients paying without insurance are charged $99, which covers the exam and X-ray. The extraction carries its own written quote, given after the dentist has read the X-ray. Simple and surgical removals are priced differently, and your quote says which one applies.

For the four plans we're in network with, the exam and X-ray are put through the plan. Cash, credit cards, CareCredit financing and credit union financing for larger treatments are accepted. The cost and insurance page picks up whatever isn't answered here, payment options included.

Why patients choose our 4500 South office

Same-day times are held Monday through Wednesday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Thursday, 8:00 AM to noon. Call first and your room is set before you get here, with a dentist expecting you. After hours the phone still rings to a live answering service, 24/7, and the first opening on the next office day is held for you.

We are in network with Delta Dental Premier, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah, SelectHealth and Cigna. Most other dental plans are out of network, and we submit the claim for you. Parking is on site. CareCredit and credit union financing are available for larger treatments. If you're nervous about having a wisdom tooth removed, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation are options; mention it when you call.

Frequently asked questions

Will it come out at the first visit?

Often. Call (385) 480-0270 while the office is open and a same-day time is held; once the X-ray is read and the quote is in writing, the dentist can usually remove the tooth right then. A large, active infection around the tooth is the exception, since it may need a few days of treatment before extraction is safe.

Is wisdom tooth removal a surgical extraction?

Sometimes. A wisdom tooth that has fully erupted and stands upright is usually a simple extraction. One that's tilted, partly covered by gum, or still under bone is surgical. The X-ray tells the dentist which, and both kinds are done in our office.

Do the other wisdom teeth come out too?

Not at this visit. An emergency appointment deals with the tooth that's causing the problem. The dentist tells you what the X-ray shows about the others, but removing them is a separate decision made later.

How long does recovery take?

Most people are back to normal activities within a few days. Swelling peaks around the second day. For the first three days, no straws, smoking or hard rinsing, since those can dislodge the clot and cause a dry socket. If pain gets worse after day three, call us.
